The industrial past informs the design brief

Our client approached us to assist in a development appraisal, and maximise the potential of this restricted brownfield site in the conservation area of a historic mining village in Fife.

Through extensive Briefing and Feasibility studies, the overall Masterplan, and the design of each residential property was developed to meet market demand, providing a rich mix of 3, 4, 5 and 6 bedroom family homes on this former industrial site.

The site is defined by a listed masonry boundary wall and distinctive pitched-roof industrial buildings. After extensive historical research and site analysis, we used this as inspiration for a contemporary design approach rooted in the character of the site.

Our proposal retained the presence of the original masonry wall, re-setting the new boundary back from the perimeter and puncturing it to form openings which could facilitate and access the homes beyond.

Above the ground floor masonry plinth, a series of zinc-clad gables create a striking composition that echoes the industrial buildings that once occupied the site, while responding to the wider townscape.

At its heart, the scheme sought to contribute much-needed housing into the town centre, while demonstrating how innovative design can breathe new life into underused and dilapidated sites.

By reimagining former industrial land, we can help strengthen communities, enhance streetscapes, and create places with a lasting sense of identity.
