Working within a listed building requires a careful and thorough approach
37-41 Nicolson Street is a Category B listed building in Edinburgh’s South Side, originally constructed in 1899 as a department store.
Many in Edinburgh will be familiar with the more recent family-run hardware shop, which operated from the building for over forty years.
Our proposal will convert the building into a new high-end restaurant while retaining and restoring its key historical architectural features.
Much of the work focuses on removing later alterations and revealing the original structure, including decorative plaster ceilings, timber staircases, and column details.
Working within a listed building requires a careful and thorough approach.
The design prioritises the preservation of the historic fabric while introducing the infrastructure needed to support the building’s new use.
All interventions have been developed in close alignment with conservation guidance to ensure the building’s character is protected and enhanced.
The project is now progressing well through the technical design stages, with detailed coordination underway to ensure the proposals can be delivered sensitively and efficiently on site.
P.S. None of this would have been possible without the creativity and hard work of our architect, Douglas Wright, and our Associate Director, Stephanie Else, who are bringing these ideas to life so beautifully.
