Master’s in Architecture
Kim Johnstone
Architectural Assistant
Kim joined the Practice after completing her Master’s in Architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, graduating with Distinction.
During her studies, she also undertook an Erasmus exchange at ETSAM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid).
Her final thesis explored Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space as a framework for understanding boundaries in Casa Luis Barragán, examining how architecture can move beyond function to shape reflective and personal experiences of space.
Prior to joining the practice, Kim worked at Howells in London, contributing to masterplans, student accommodation, and mixed-use developments. At Block Nine, Kim now applies her broad and adaptable skillset across a range of sectors within the practice.
Her experience spans the appraisal of residential and apart-hotel use classes, as well as work on listed heritage properties within the context of local town centre High Streets.
She is also involved in the technical design and delivery of complex conversion projects, including the sensitive adaptation of historic listed department stores, helping to secure the extension their lifespan by unlocking new opportunities for alternative commercial uses.
Outside work, Kim pursues her passions for Muay Thai, travel, and spending time in the hills.
